International Wushu Federation

The International Wushu Federation (IWUF), which was established on October 3rd, 1990, is the international federation (IF) that governs wushu in all its forms world-wide. Currently, the IWUF has 160 national/territorial members, across 5 continents. The IWUF is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the sole worldwide governing authority for wushu in all its forms, and is also a member of both ARISF and SportAccord.

Making wushu an Olympic sport and a healthy way of life for people around the globe.

Mission

The IWUF develops wushu throughout the world, enriching people’s lives physically and mentally, and promoting friendship and understanding, free from all forms of discrimination, between all people through the spirit of sport.

Role

The IWUF’s role, as defined by the Constitution, includes the following objectives:

  • To accept and comply with the general fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter and uphold the Olympic Spirit.
  • To promote and encourage the development and practice of wushu in all of its manifestations throughout the world.
  • To formulate and compile technical rules and regulations governing all wushu competitions.
  • To organize and approve sanction international wushu competitions and activities, to standardize IWUF member federation competitions and activities, and to formulate and implement International Wushu Judges’ and Coaches’ certification standards for approval and certifying of international wushu judges and coaches.
  • To promote and encourage the development of international wushu exchanges.
  • To promote cooperation, friendly relations, and mutual understanding among its members.
  • To actively promote and popularize wushu, and to improve health worldwide through its practice.
  • To formulate standards standardize pertaining to various items of clothing and equipment used within the sport of wushu.
  • To respect the principles of democracy, equality and harmony within the sport of wushu. To oppose all forms of racial, political, religious, cultural, ideological and gender discrimination and to oppose discrimination based on internal factions within the sport of wushu.
  • To foster the culture of ethics and integrity throughout the wushu family.

IWUF Chronology

    Wushu’s inclusion as an official sport in 2025 Chengdu The World Games.

  • 2022

    IWUF launched the Athlete of the Year Awards.

  • 2021

    IWUF accepted as an official member of the International World Games Association (IWGA).

  • 2020

    Wushu’s inclusion as an official sport in the Dakar 4th Youth Olympic Games sports programme.

  • 2018

    Wushu’s debut in the World University Wushu Championship held in Macau, China

    Wushu’s debut in African Youth Games held in Algiers, Algeria

    Wushu’s inaugural inclusion in Asia Pacific Masters Games held in Penang, Malaysia

  • 2017

    Wushu’s inaugural inclusion in the 2017 Summer Universiade program in Chinese Taipei

  • 2016

    1st Taolu World Cup held in Fuzhou, China

  • 2015

    Wushu shortlisted as an Additional Sport for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

    IWUF signs cooperation convention with FISU

  • 2014

    Nanjing 2014 Youth Wushu Tournament held in conjunction with the 2014 Youth Olympic Games

    The 1st World Taijiquan Championships are held in Chengdu, China

  • 2012

    IWUF headquarters are established in Lausanne, Switzerland

  • 2011

    Wushu shortlisted for inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

  • 2008

    Beijing 2008 Wushu Tournament held in conjunction with the 2008 Summer Olympic Games

    1st World Junior Wushu Championships held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    IOC officially recognizes the IWUF during its 113th session
