The 4th World Taijiquan Championships were successfully held in Singapore from August 23-27, 2024. Hosted by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) and organized by the Singapore Wushu Dragon & Lion Dance Federation, the event attracted over 320 participants from 32 countries and regions across five continents. The World Taijiquan Championships, one of the six official events under the auspices of the IWUF, is a world-class competition focused on Taijiquan, providing a platform for top Taijiquan athletes worldwide to communicate their Taiji experiences and hone their skills.
This year’s championships featured two event categories: Championship Events and Demonstration Events. Specifically, the Championship Events included Optional Routines, New Standardized Routines, and Compulsory Routines. The Demonstration Events were comprised of Compulsory Routines and Traditional Routines. A total of 38 gold medals were awarded in the Championship Events and 29 first prizes were given in the Demonstration Events. Both categories incorporated Sun-style, Wu-style, Yang-style, Chen-style, and Wu (Hao)-style of Taijiquan. Notably, as wushu has been included as an official event in the 2026 Dakar Summer Youth Olympic Games, featuring a Taijiquan Combined event (Taijiquan & Taijishan), this Singapore event introduced optional and compulsory Taijishan routine competitions for the first time in the World Taijiquan Championships’ history.
After four days of intense competition, the medal tally concluded with Team Hong Kong, China topping the leaderboard with 11 gold medals. China closely followed it with 10 gold medals, securing second place. The host Team Singapore ranked third with 5 golds, 4 silvers and 5 bronzes. Team Vietnam, USA, Malaysia, Philippines and Macao, China also earned gold medals. Furthermore, Team Ukraine and Brunei each acquired their first-ever silver medal in their journey of participating in the World Taijiquan Championships.
